Shortly after adopting my five year old mixed breed (dachshundt and beagle) I discovered he was leash reactive - he was just awful. Lunging, barking, and growling at any dog he saw while on walks - even two blocks away. I tried obedience class, but my dog was expelled. The class trainer said I needed to get my dog put on medication, which I considered unacceptable. So I started researching on the internet, found "Feisty Fido", and purchased a copy.Patricia's instructions were clear about how to tame my dog's behavior. She said it would take six months or so, but I could redirect his attention away from reacting to other dogs to looking at me and getting a treat. It took six months, but one day we were on a walk. I saw a dog and owner coming toward us from three blocks away, so I got a treat out of my pocket and began to watch my dog. At two blocks away, I saw my dog fixate on the other dog, so I held the treat in front of my nose and prepared to say "WATCH." But before I could say anything my dog turned around, looked at my face, sat down, and ignored the other dog. Just what I had been training him to do. Just what Patricia's book said he would eventually do.Three years later, he has forgotten how to be reactive when he is on a leash. My neighbors compliment his behavior - they said they used to think that he wanted to kill every dog saw. Thanks, Patricia. You book, and my patience, have made my dog into a pet that pleases both me and my neighbors.
The program was clearly explained, and simple to implement. My dog was attacked by a much larger dog a while back, and went from fearful to reactive/aggressive when she sees other dogs on walks. This peaked a few months back, and I bought this booklet to learn how to help her. She started getting noticeably better after working through the beginning of the booklet (focusing on "Watch"). I've since finished the book and we can now confidently pass other dogs on walks, though I don't think she'll ever be comfortable greeting other dogs on leash again, and we have to go SLOOOOOW with off leash greetings as well (not really covered in this booklet). As other reviewers have said, this is a very short read, but that's because it gets straight to the point and gives you exactly the information you need to help a leash reactive dog. Highly recommended if your dog suffers from leash reactivity.
I have been using this training program for a month and I have seen some really good results. My dog was so reactive that she could not walk past a place a dog had just walked without freaking out. Just today, we passed the neighborhood pee spot, three people talking in a drive way( 30 feet away), squirrels, birds, cars driving by and a cat sitting in the road surveying his domain(50 feet away). This may not sound like much but considering 30 days ago I was avoiding walking her as much as I could because my loving family dog became a lunging menace on walks, I think this is wonderful. The book says 6 months until you know how good your dog will get. My dog doesn’t have to perfect but I love that we can enjoy walks together. The hardest part about this program for me was training myself. I would come back from a bad walk in the beginning thinking about all the things I automatically did wrong. Once I learned how to handle certain situations automatically everything seemed to fall into place. It works so well I started using it during thunderstorms and when people come to the door. Both situations are starting to improve. I call it calmness training because you are really teaching your dog how to be calm on command. This program requires consistency and hard work. It is not a quick fix solution but for me and my dog it has been a blessing.
Fantastic resource for the leash aggressive dog! I am a Veterinarian and I refer people to this book often. Quick read. Provides understanding for the motivation behind the issue and pointers on how to improve the situation with behavior modification. Highly recommend.
This book is short, and clearly written. It is often funny, and is very easy to understand. The author goes into enough detail and gives advice on enough side issues (car aggression, techniques for specific kinds of dogs or owners) that I get the sense that she has worked these principles for a very long time with pretty much every kind of dog out there. In other words, at no point did I think, "but what about my dog, he's different because" without the author addressing the issue a few paragraphs later. If you want volume for your book-spending money, you may be a little unhappy with how short the book was, but I was relieved by it -- I wanted to finish the book and start applying the training ASAP, so the shorter the better. The "watch" technique is working for my dog. He's not "cured", but we are having positive events -- I got him to watch me while we were in my truck instead of lunging and barking at a dog that was walking by. He also let a cow (we hike, and ranchers let their cows out in the high country to graze) walk within ten feet of us and did not even bark. He actually stayed calm and kept looking back to me for treats. Maybe he doesn't mind cows (!), but staying that calm near another strange animal is new behavior.I still expect it to take several months before he lets a dog go by us on the trail without trying to tear it apart, but I am seeing very small results just one week into using the watch command. Like the author suggests, we are working with easy to moderate situations, and just getting those down before we move on to high stress situations.I have worked with 2 different $80 an hour dog trainers on this problem with my dog, and while they did teach me helpful things, I think I've gotten more useful information out of this book. If you can't afford a trainer, and you feel like you can't go another day with your dog acting like a maniac, definitely give this book a try.
