Looking for Madeleine is the not-to-be-missed account that the online haters tried to silence. Its award-winning authors, Anthony Summers & Robbyn Swan, feature in the Netflix series The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.  Â
The audiobook:Â
Identifies the blunders made during the police search for MadeleineÂ
Draws on confidential police sources.Â
Analyses the thousands of pages of the Portuguese police dossierÂ
Pinpoints the misreading of forensic evidence that - for a time - turned Kate and Gerry McCann into formal suspectsÂ
Follows the clues indicating that the McCanns' apartment was watched, that the apartment had been visited by a phoney "charity collectorÂ
Reports, in frightening detail on the many earlier sex assaults on British children in the area.  Â
Twelve years on, as Scotland Yard and Portuguese investigators continue their work, the Yard is reportedly focusing on a specific suspect. A senior officer told the authors: 'The case is solvable'. Â

This review of the Madeline McCann case was extremely disappointing because the author did not keep an open mind. She basically stated in the prologue that "in no way were the parents responsible for this", and that set the tone for an extremely one-sided story. I expected more from Robyn Swan and Anthony Summers, the husband and wife team who wrote this book. Anthony Summers is one of my favorite authors and he has written many great books including the seminal "Not in your Lifetime" which is the best book ever written about the JFK assassination. This book, however, fell short.
The writers state that "The McCanns have not sought to profit from their situation - and Madeleine's Fund has built-in provisions to ensure this does not occur." however they do not appear to have researched the Fund in depth. They omit the fact that the Fund is registered as an Ltd, not as a charity. They do not mention, or draw any conclusions, from the fact that the parents are themselves directors of the fund and other former and current directors are family members (his brother John McCann, her uncle Brian Kennedy) friends (John Corner, Esther McVey MP) and relations like mr. McCann's boss and their sponsor (not the uncle) Brian Kennedy's lawyer, mr. Smethurst. There is no mention of the Fund spending an absurd amount (£37.071) on `website costs' in the first year, nor the two mortgage payments, nor any mention of the substantial amounts spent for hiring campaign manager Justine McGuinness and spokesman David Hughes (these former employees are not mentioned at all), nor the Portuguese Public Relations company 'Lift Consulting' hired by the Fund. Sponsor Kennedy initially paid the costs of hiring PR consultant Clarence Mitchell, but only until mid-2009, after which the Fund has him on a monthly retainer. No mention that the Fund was trademarked on May 18th, 2007, in a number of categories, one of which is 'Social services rendered by individuals to meet the needs of others, namely pastoral counselling, advice and guidance services; information services related to the provision of assistance to families and others affected by missing children', which could technically allow mrs. McCann to be paid from the Fund for her charity work. Is she? We don't know. Did the writers look into this? No, they are curiously uncurious about the Fund. They did not investigate the allegation that the News of the World reward money, consisting of donations from its readers and, if not used as a reward in the case, destined for 3 children's charities, was silently paid into the Fund without any mention to the public who paid for it, nor by the Fund nor by News of the World. The McCanns both became Directors of the Fund just before they announced they were suing Gonçalo Amaral. Is it relevant? I think it is & would like to know if the Fund spends money on suing Dr. Amaral. The fact that the then Director of the fund John McCann signed official Fund accounts which referred to G. Amaral as "Amoral" can be an indication the board would not refuse funds to spend on this. The writers did not look into it.The writers state that "On Twitter, Moore has cited a critical analysis of the Madeleine's fund most recent - 2013 - accounts. He himself, meanwhile, has long included a `donate' button on his own website." Nigel Moore is the owner of www.mccannfiles.com and publishes the critical analysis by Enid O'Dowd of the Fund accounts over several years here http://www.mccannfiles.com/id232.html (scroll down a bit). The writers do not give the impression they have read the information that is provided here for free, instead preferring to smear Moore by innuendo. And that's only the Fund. I am very much unimpressed by the book and the research. One star.
This is an excellent book which searches for answers as to what happened to Madeleine in Portugal in 2007. It helps to evaluate the forensics evidence in a constructive way, and dispels the inaccurate views of haters on the internet. An amazing book!
Interesting and informative book. Still no nearer the truth, the question remains WHO DUNNIT? Will we ever find out? ??????
It was good to be presented with the facts in this book so that I could make up my own mind as to what fate befell Madeleine.
I skim read the book at the local book store to get a feel for whether it would be worth my time to order it from Amazon. Can't do that, sorry. It skims over far too much in absolving the McCanns but doesn't present intelligent arguments to prove their non-involvement in their daughter's appearance.I have to agree with those reviewers who don't find this book worth recommending. Pity, I would have loved to read a good book about the case. The social landscape that protects media properties worth millions of pounds from hard questions about their behaviour, then supplies professional writers to write PR for parents who were at the very least, criminally negligent, to get away with misleading the public? A poor single woman in Leicestershire would be hauled in by child protective services, the McCanns were protected all the way.I'm going to avoid writing everything I hated about the book, its condescension to those people who found the McCanns behaviour troubling, one sided narratives that directed people to not objective or subjective truth, but a complete whitewash, the insulting of the initial Portuguese investigations. What incensed me was the way they treated Martin Grime's cadaver sniffing dogs finding traces of Madeleine's demise all over the premises. He is a canine forensic expert and their field of expertise is either bunk, or it is not. It is accepted by the FBI and while I'd never suggest it was absolute proof of her death, only that it was worth considering in conjunction with all other evidence. This is an ongoing case, and while we may never get a resolution or answer to what happened to Madeleine, this book in no way exonerates them.
I have followed the case for some time and I had high hopes for this book in view of the authors' good reputation.I assumed that they would raise all the points that have made people doubt the McCanns and then provide a constructive rebuttal of them. Instead they simply believe everything the McCanns have said and denounce the doubters as that infantile troll word haters. This book doesn't even deserve one star!
